Ripley, this research collection includes three series relating to Terzaghi including; biographical materials, publications and professional reports. The reports series includes information about the British Columbia projects with which Terzaghi was involved. The research collection also includes copies of publications by Ralph B. Peck and J.D. Mollard.

Karl Terzaghi (1883-1963) was considered the "father of Soil Mechanics" now known as Geotechnical Engineering. A native of Prague, Terzaghi graduated from the Technical University of Graz and then worked as a geologist in the field of civil engineering. Following World War I he carried out a program of research into the properties of soils that lead to the publication in 1925 of his famous book, Erdbaumechanik which presented the first co-ordinated picture of soils as engineering materials.
